EOS 7D Best Price

The Canon EOS 7D became available in September, 2009. Judging from the excitement stirred up by the announcement of this camera, and the long waiting lists held by some dealers, it may be awhile before enough of the cameras are on our shores to make it easily available.

Generally, for a camera that has the high demand that the Canon EOS 7D has, nobody will be offering discounts for the first few months, so expect to pay full retail price - the best you can hope for is to save on shipping. Usually, you can get the best price and best deals on shipping from Amazon.

If you want this camera ASAP, you should sign up for the waiting list or preorder at Amazon. They'll notify you when the camera is available. In the meantime, you should check with local dealers in your area - some may have a shorter waiting list or an allotment that is not already spoken for. I've heard of people who were able to get new models faster from their local dealer than from the biggies in New York, and at the same price! The drawback to a local dealer is they might require a non-refundable deposit but might not be able to get it any quicker than the big dealers, so you'll be stuck waiting for them because of your deposit. Also, buying local means paying sales tax, which can be hefty on a purchase like this.

October 2009 update:

The camera body and kits are now available at some retailers. They are shipping from Amazon! A friend of mine emailed to tell me his is supposed to arrive tomorrow (October 2)! See price comparisons and where you can buy the Canon EOS 7D at the Digital SLR Camera Guide.

Amazon

Time after time I've checked the major retail sites, including the top camera gear sites, only to find that if Amazon carries it, their deal is best overall when you consider price, ease of ordering, cost of shipping, and speed of delivery. Amazon is always open for business, while many of the big New York camera Stores shut down for their religious holidays or have odd weekend hours. I respect them for honoring their beliefs, but they've lost my business several times when I needed something right away and they weren't open, not even on their website.

Other sites may discount a few bucks, but this is lost (and more besides) after you add delivery charges. Amazon is usually cheaper on shipping charges. Oftentimes they offer free "super saver" shipping for orders over a certain dollar amount, and camera gear almost always qualifies. And during the holidays, they usually have some type of free or discounted shipping deals, and they'll also let you know if they can get it to you by Christmas.

If you sign up for Amazon Prime membership, which has a low annual fee, you'll get free Second Day Air shipping on products carried by Amazon, and only $3.99 (as of September, 2009) to upgrade to one-day shipping. If you buy just a few items a year from Amazon, the free expedited shipping will easily pay for the cost of the annual Amazon Prime fee. I highly recommend it.

With Amazon, you know from their website whether they have a product in stock. Some other sites may offer a lower price, but they don't tell you whether they have it in stock or when they will ship it.

Find Prices for EOS 7D at Amazon

B&H is my next favorite place to buy high-end camera gear. They carry a lot of the high-end gear that Amazon doesn't, and if you need to you can call them and talk to a salesman that knows the gear.

Over the years, I've bought many lenses and accessories from Adorama. Their selection is sometimes better than B&H and their prices are usually as good or better.
